Dental Hygiene and Exams
Regular dental checkups, cleanings, and X-rays are vital to maintaining an attractive and healthy smile. Coming in for a checkup at least twice a year allows Dr. Wynn and her team to keep your teeth healthy while evaluating your risk for any oral illnesses. At the end of your examination, Dr. Wynn will be able to answer any questions and provide you with a personalized treatment and hygiene plan.
What should I expect during my checkup?
Your checkup will begin with a comprehensive cleaning by one of our skilled hygienists. They will remove any built-up plaque and tartar, take X-rays, and floss your teeth. While your hygienist is working, they will check for signs of any underlying problems.
After your cleaning, Dr. Wynn will begin a visual examination. She will examine your mouth, face, jaw, and neck.
This examination will include:
- Periodontal exam
- Intra-oral photo tour of the mouth
- Oral cancer screening
- Head and neck exam
- Early cavity detection
- Orthodontic evaluation
- TMJ exam
- Fluoride treatment (if needed)
During your visit, Dr. Wynn will look for cracked or decayed teeth as well as any growths or sores in and around your mouth. She will also examine the lymph nodes in your head, neck, and jaw for any tenderness or pain.
Dr. Wynn and the rest of her team will be happy to address any questions or concerns you may have about your oral health and treatment plan.
How often should I schedule a checkup?
A healthy mouth is very important in day-to-day life. Beyond aesthetics, healthy teeth and gums make it possible to eat and speak normally. Ignoring your dental health can lead to serious and costly complications.
Regular examinations play an important part in maintaining your oral health, preventing decay and disease, and treating any existing conditions as early as possible. In addition to proper daily hygiene, Dr. Wynn recommends that all patients visit us at least once every six months. She may recommend more frequent visits if needed.
Can dental sealants help me?
Dental sealants are a great way to prevent cavities from developing. Sealants are thin plastic coatings that are painted onto the surface of the molars. These coatings prevent food and bacteria from getting down into the pits and grooves of the teeth. These sealants can help smoothen your teeth while preventing cavities and decay.
Do you offer fluoride treatments?
Yes! Fluoride treatments can help strengthen your teeth while protecting them from decay. These treatments are available during your regular cleaning and examination. Fluoride treatments are not dangerous or painful and can provide long-lasting protection.

Patient Testimonials
Dr. Mary Ellen Wynn’s dental practice in the Western Hills area is by far the best dentist I have visited. My first appointment was 15+ years ago when she took me in for an urgent cracked tooth. Service was excellent and professional. My family continues to visit on a regular basis.

Dr. Wynn and her staff are exceptional in their friendliness, knowledge and help. They all make visiting the dentist a delightful experience. Dr. Wynn is the best dentist I’ve encountered in all my life and would recommend her services to anyone, especially those who are afraid of going to the dentist.

My mother and I have been patients of Dr. Wynn’s for approximately ten years. Both of us have been impressed by her professionalism and expertise, and not to mention her fantastic staff. We’ve gone to her for dental needs far beyond routine cleanings, and have been extremely satisfied.

My childhood experience with a dentist was best described as grim. It led me to neglect my dental health. Teeth that been improperly drilled and filled had to be pulled. My husband found Dr. Wynn and shortly thereafter, so did I. The experience has changed my outlook on dentists.
